Specalist Subjects

Key stage 3

Each student is taught 5 hours of PE a fortnight in a variety of activities including football, netball, trampolining, rounders, cricket, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, dance, orienteering, badminton, tennis, volleyball and fitness

Key stage 4

Each student is taught 5 hours of PE a fortnight in a variety of activities including football, netball, rounders, cricket, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, dance, orienteering, badminton, tennis, trampolining, volleyball and fitness.

In addition students also have the opportunity to choose to take examination subjects in GCSE PE, GCSE Dance and BTEC Sport. In core PE lessons students may also take the level 1 sports leaders award or dance leaders award, first aid certificates and various other national governing body awards such as gymnastic leaders award, junior football organisers award and young lifeguarding award amongst others.

Students will have many opportunities to demonstrate their skills in sports and dance leadership through our work with partner special schools and primary schools, the Kent school games, primary sports festivals held at Swadelands and the inter-house competitions. Many of our students have gone on to volunteer at clubs outside of school, such as Pegasus gymnastics club and various football clubs.

Keys stage 5

Each student is offered 2 hours a week of recreation time, activities include the level 2 community sports leaders award, football team, badminton,trampolining, fitness and dance.

Students also have the opportunity to choose to take examination subjects in BTEC National Award or Certificate in Sport, AS Dance or Performing Arts. All students are offered the Appointed persons first aid certificate and various national governing body coaching and refereeing awards such as the FA level 1 coaching certificate and FA referee award.

Extra-curricular clubs and activities

Over 20 sports and activities are offered by the PE department based on the interests of our students, recent clubs have included, dance, football, gymnastics, lifeguarding, swimming, trampolining, analysis of sport using dart trainer, GCSE coursework and revision sessions, cricket, tennis, netball, athletics, rounders, badminton, 5-a-side football, basketball and Duke of Edinburgh award.

The PE department run a number of competitive teams who compete against local district school teams in football, netball, rounders, cricket, rugby, athletics and basketball amongst others.

Swadelands are the proud holders of the year 9 district football trophy 2008 and intermediate boys athletics trophy 2008.

Recent successes also include the year 8 district football trophy 2007 and intermediate girls athletics trophy 2007.

We have a number of extremely gifted and talented students in a range of sporting activities from rowing to football, netball to rugby, ballroom dancing to ice-skating.

Outcomes of Specialist Sports College

As a specialist sports college we have a number of statutory output targets to achieve, which used the sports specialist to raise achievement and attainment across the whole school.  Further details of these targets can be found on the Specialist Schools Academies Trust.
